This will help us control harvest timing and pick the best possible crops.” Blackmore added that up to 20-60% of crops are often discarded due to improper harvesting times. Supermarkets refuse to buy damaged vegetables, and consumers avoid them too. By using robots, farmers can ensure that only the highest-quality produce reaches the market. When picking tomatoes and lettuce, the robot will select the best options, leaving behind those that aren’t ready for sale just yet. Some lettuces may not be suitable for immediate sale but could improve over the next few days, making them more valuable later. Although the developers haven’t revealed the exact mechanics or cost of the robot, the potential benefits for agriculture and the environment are clear. With the growing global population, such innovations could play a crucial role in meeting food demands sustainably.
