Soon, robots are set to revolutionize the way farmers harvest vegetables. Scientists have developed a farm robot capable of harvesting crops only when they are fully mature. This machine can also be programmed to harvest crops at the optimal time, ensuring maximum yield and quality. Researchers predict that such robotic systems will be widely used in agriculture by 2020.
Simon Blackmore, a professor at the university, explained: “We are developing a new agricultural machinery system based on small, smart machines. We are also working on laser weed control and precision spraying technologies to achieve 100% chemical efficiency, better harvest timing, and improved crop quality.â€
Blackmore added that between 20% and 60% of crops are often left unharvested due to improper timing. Supermarkets typically reject damaged or subpar vegetables, and consumers are unlikely to buy them. This leads to unnecessary waste and financial loss for farmers.
When picking tomatoes and lettuce, the robot is designed to select the highest-quality produce. Some lettuces may not be ready for sale today, but they can continue to grow and become marketable in the coming days. This selective approach helps reduce waste and ensures better returns for farmers.
Although the developers haven’t revealed the exact mechanics of the robot or its cost, the potential benefits are clear. With the integration of AI and automation, farming is moving toward a more efficient, sustainable, and profitable future.
