Michael Foley: Correctly distinguish the application of Wi-Fi Direct and Bluetooth v3.0 + HS

Regarding the Wi-Fi Alliance announcement regarding Wi-Fi Direct, Bluetooth SIG Executive Director Michael Foley issued the following statement:

The Wi-Fi Alliance announcement about Wi-Fi Direct has confused the entire wireless industry. Not long ago, Wi-Fi was considered to be the best technology for wireless local area networks (LAN, that is, connecting personal devices to the Internet), and Bluetooth wireless technology was the most suitable technology for wireless personal area networks (PAN, that is, connecting personal devices to each other). However, since 802.11 and Bluetooth radio frequency co-appeared in the same device (such as a mobile phone or a personal computer), questions about how to use 802.11 radio frequency to improve PAN applications have arisen. The answer is to use the Bluetooth v3.0 + HS specification adopted by the Bluetooth SIG in April 2009. The specification defines how to use 802.11 radio and Bluetooth radio in combination. The combined use of the two RFs produces a complete, high-performance system that enables each technology in PAN applications to achieve optimal performance.

The Bluetooth v3.0 + HS specification does not use Wi-Fi. It uses the 802.11 radio frequency specifications promulgated by the International Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). The existing functions of Bluetooth (such as simple pairing and configuration files) can already provide users with an effective and reasonable complete solution, and there are more than 3 billion Bluetooth products on the market. Users who have used this technology for a long time are very familiar with it.

Wi-Fi Direct's direct connection technology is actually the networking of two devices. For example, connect a personal computer and a printer to use an Ethernet switch to print pictures (Wi-Fi was originally called wireless Ethernet). Even if these two devices can be connected to the network and assume the existing IP infrastructure (such as DHCP, DNS, etc.) or they automatically search for IP in the same way, they can communicate through the IP protocol, but users still need to install an IP interface for the printer And driver. This approach is not a big problem in a home environment, because users have printer drivers and installing the interface once is not too complicated. However, in most cases, the user's home will have a wireless access point, and the user will also connect the printer to all computers at home, so in the home environment, the user may choose a wireless access point rather than Wi-Fi Direct. In a mobile environment, it may not be possible to get a driver. Even if you have a driver, installing the driver for one-time printing is too complicated for users. Users need to install the printer and driver on the computer to print pictures. This has similar problems of lack of usability in other common situations.

In contrast, two devices using Bluetooth technology utilize standardized profiles. For the above example, just right-click on the image to be printed as usual and select "Print" or "Send to". The device will then search for the printer and print the image without installing additional drivers or software. Very simple, convenient and efficient.

Obviously, there are multiple solutions for searching IP services, and any one of these solutions can be used to simplify the above IP-based printing operation. However, there are multiple solutions to search for IP services, which will make the user's operation too complicated, and many equipment manufacturers are likely not to use one solution uniformly. Users will need to understand the solutions used in their products and only Can buy compatible equipment. Therefore, the Wi-Fi Direct specification will not bring much help to users, but instead makes users have to understand whether their products use UPnP, Bonjour, DLNA, SLP or other technologies. If using the Bluetooth solution, users only need to know whether their products support Bluetooth.
