The ZigBee Alliance is announcing the benefits of integrating EnOcean's energy harvesting technology with ZigBee 3.0 to expand the reach of the Internet of Things (IoT) in smart homes, smart cities and industry 4.0.
The ZigBee Alliance will team up with the EnOcean Alliance to create an open global standard to further integrate energy harvesting technology into IoT sensor solutions. The EnOcean Alliance is led by EnOcean GmbH and currently has more than 100 companies and organizations involved. EnOcean GmbH is a supplier of a wide range of energy harvesting self-powered modules and transmitters for building and lighting control.
ZigBee is a mesh protocol that provides a low-power wireless network at 2.4 GHz on the unlicensed sub-Ghz spectrum. The latest version of the ZigBee 3.0 protocol has only recently been approved to integrate the descriptions, behaviors and specifications of previous specific applications in a common application layer to provide IoT support for smart home buildings and neighborhoods.
It is expected that a combination of the two major alliances will set up a task force to define the technical specifications required to integrate standardized EnOcean Equipment Profiles (EEP) and ZigBee 3.0 to operate in the global IEEE 802.15.4 2.4 GHz standard. The definition of this global technical specification is expected to be completed and released in the second quarter of 2016.
