[PConline News] The level of fascination with curved/flexible devices in the entire technology space seems to be increasing day by day. At this year's MWC show, we saw another flexible display prototype, which came from a British company named FlexEnable. Although FlexEnable is not a consumer electronics device maker, this display does not work (for demonstration purposes only), but they claim that their technology is ready to be put into use. FlexEnable is currently negotiating with several hardware vendors for cooperation. If all goes well, related products are expected to come out after 18 months.
The FlexEnable prototype uses plastic transistors to achieve flexibility. This panel, called OLCD (Organic Liquid Crystal Display), achieves the same resolution as a typical LCD and consumes essentially the same energy. These transistors can basically wrap anything or be applied outside the display area. FlexEnable also demonstrated a slim, flexible fingerprint sensor that can be wrapped around a doorknob to provide greater security without creating additional trouble for the user.
Like most flexible displays, the FlexEnable prototype presented this time is also sealed in a rigid metal frame. Although OLCD has certain flexibility, it is not the kind of material that can be bent indefinitely—this feature may have to wait for the flexible OLED panel to achieve. In any case, the development of flexible display technology has become faster and faster.
