Amazon warehouse robots total 45,000 units increased by 50% year-on-year

According to the Seattle Times, Amazon's warehouse robot army has grown a lot in 2016.

According to reports, Amazon's 20 logistics centers now have a total of 45,000 robots, an increase of 50% over the same period a year ago. Amazon announced a year ago that its logistics center is equipped with 30,000 robots and 230,000 employees.

Kivo robot

Amazon acquired a robot company called Kiva Systems for $775 million in 2012. Kiva's robots can automatically sort goods in large warehouses, helping Amazon to increase efficiency. These robots are 16 inches high and weigh about 145 kilograms. They can move up to 5 miles per hour and can carry up to 317 kilograms of cargo.

When Amazon acquired Kiva, Amazon's investor relations director Phil Hardin said: "This investment will affect many of the factors in our cost structure, but we are very happy to be able to acquire Kiva. For us This is a great innovation, and we think it will make the warehouse work more efficient, it will make our warehouse more productive."

Amazon also uses other types of robots in its warehouse, including large robotic arms that can move large items. At the end of 2014, Amazon claimed that it had 15,000 robots in 10 warehouses; by the end of 2015, the number of robots had increased to 30,000, and now it has increased to 45,000.

It is said that Amazon's chief financial officer Brian Olsavsky said at a robot conference last April: "We have changed the automation work and its scale many times, and we will continue to learn and grow."

Osavski added that the number of robots used in different warehouses is different. Some warehouses are equipped with a large number of robots, almost completely automated, while others are not equipped with too many robots for economic reasons.

In addition to the warehouse, Amazon intends to automate other aspects of its business. Amazon announced in December last year that the company achieved drone delivery for the first time in the UK. It also filed a patent application that would allow automated drones to be used to deliver parcels from large airships to users in the future.
