Mitsubishi's new MPV model Expander is known as the Mitsubishi version of the Baojun 730, the most fierce MPV! Is this Mitsubishi?

Following the announcement regarding the suspension of Mitsubishi’s car development plans, the focus for the brand now shifts to SUVs and MPVs. Recently, Mitsubishi officially unveiled the official image of its new MPV model, the Expander. Positioned as an entry-level 7-seater MPV, it's often referred to as the Mitsubishi equivalent of the Baojun 730. This new vehicle is set to hit the Southeast Asian market by the end of this year, with potential for domestic production in the future. Typically, MPVs are known for their practicality, but the front face of Mitsubishi’s new car is surprisingly aggressive. The bold styling is quite striking, with the upper light assembly acting as a daytime running light, while the headlights are located on either side of the front bumper. They resemble those of the Baojun 510. The guard panel in the center of the front bumper features a hollow design, giving it somewhat of an SUV vibe. Circular fog lights are placed lower down. The side profile of the car is equally impressive, with a clear waistline and a strong line along the lower side skirts. However, it’s unfortunate that the new model doesn’t feature side sliding doors like some competitors; instead, it opts for conventional doors, which might affect practicality and appeal. In an effort to revitalize its presence, Mitsubishi’s designers appear to be taking bold risks. Each aspect of the Expander seems to exude a strong design philosophy. The D-pillar is designed to look suspended, and the taillights are quite distinctive. The trunk features lines that echo the styling of the front, while the lower guard panel at the rear bumper mirrors the front bumper's design, also featuring a hollow structure. From the images of the production version, it’s clear that the new car closely follows the design language of the XM Concept concept car, although the latter appears more avant-garde. Inside, the center console offers a layered feel, with a layout that feels quite homely. The airbag cover on the passenger side is slotted, and the handbrake is relatively basic. These details suggest cost-consciousness, which aligns with a mid-range positioning. The seating arrangement will follow the 2+3+2 7-seat configuration of the concept car, with expectations of good flexibility in the seating arrangements—a hallmark of Japanese cars. In terms of powertrain, the new vehicle will come equipped with a 1.5L four-cylinder naturally aspirated engine paired with either a manual or automatic transmission. This power setup falls short compared to competitors like the Baojun 730, which offers a 1.5T turbocharged engine. As for the future prospects of this new MPV, the current lineup of GAC Mitsubishi remains uncertain. With this move, Mitsubishi is clearly trying to carve out a niche in the MPV segment, leveraging its strengths in practicality and affordability. However, whether this strategy will resonate with consumers remains to be seen.
