Former Google Chief Game Designer: Neuroscience is a Compass for VR Development

Noah Falstein believes that the future of virtual reality isn't just about technology or market trends—it's deeply rooted in understanding how the human brain works. At the VRDC 2017 conference, he described the current state of VR as "crossing a mountain pass." On the other side, there could be a lush valley full of possibilities, or just emptiness. He warned that the path is full of challenges and it's easy to get stuck along the way. However, Falstein argues that neuroscience can serve as a compass, guiding VR, AR, and MR into the right direction. By studying how the brain processes information, we can create more immersive and meaningful experiences. As a veteran in game development, Falstein has worked with companies like Williams Electronics and LucasArts, and was recently the chief game designer at Google. Now, he runs his own design consulting firm called The Inspiracy. In his talks, he often reflects on humanity’s long history of sharing visual experiences—starting from ancient cave paintings, through frescoes, cameras, and now VR. He sees VR as the next evolution in our quest to convey images and emotions to others. One of the biggest challenges in VR, according to Falstein, is motion sickness. He explained that when there's a mismatch between what the eyes see and what the inner ear senses, it can lead to nausea. This is especially true when movement is too fast or sudden. While some people are more susceptible than others, he believes solutions are emerging. To reduce motion sickness, developers should aim for high frame rates (preferably over 90), minimize latency (under 20ms), use proper visual cues, and limit acceleration. Blurring the peripheral vision during fast movements can also help, a technique already used in some VR applications like Google Earth VR. As eye-tracking technology improves, users will enjoy even smoother and more comfortable experiences. Falstein also highlighted the emotional power of VR. He noted that VR is particularly effective at evoking fear because it activates the amygdala, the part of the brain responsible for processing fear and memory. This makes VR ideal for horror games and immersive storytelling. But beyond fear, VR has the potential to foster empathy and connection, something traditional media struggles to achieve. In addition to entertainment, VR has promising applications in healthcare. It can be used to treat phobias, PTSD, and chronic pain, as well as to train medical professionals. Falstein believes this is an exciting frontier with huge potential. He ended his talk with an encouraging message: “This is really exciting, and the future is in your hands.”
