REVIEW: In July, Xiaomi unveiled its AI speaker, a smart voice-activated device capable of controlling not only their own Mi robotic vacuum cleaners but also integrating with a wide range of other smart home gadgets. It’s both practical and intelligent.
At the Mi5X conference held on July 26th, Xiaomi officially introduced this AI speaker, marking their entry into the competitive smart speaker market alongside companies like Google and Alibaba. Recently, Xiao Lei (WeChat ID: leitech) got his hands on one of these speakers, and here's my take after spending some time with it.
In terms of design, the Mi AI speaker uses plastic materials, giving it a modern and sleek appearance. Its overall shape resembles a smaller version of the Mi Air Purifier.
The Mi AI speaker weighs 636 grams, making it substantial yet still comfortable to handle. Its smooth lines and compact size make it a great addition to any living space.
On the top of the speaker, you’ll find an annular array featuring six microphone holes and playback/voice control buttons.
The upper edge houses the speaker grille, which emits different colored lights depending on the situation or function being performed.
Below the main body of the speaker, there are sound holes in the form of a honeycomb pattern.
The bottom of the speaker hides the power interface, which uses a unique connector design providing up to 21W of power.
The base of the speaker also features a groove for routing the power cable and comes equipped with non-slip feet for stability.
From a visual standpoint, the Mi AI speaker feels worth its price tag of 299 yuan.
One notable aspect of this speaker is its compatibility with various smart home ecosystems. Whether you're adjusting the lights, checking the weather, or setting reminders, the Mi AI speaker does so seamlessly. It also supports multi-language commands, making it accessible to a broader audience.
The sound quality is decent for its size, delivering clear audio without any noticeable distortion at moderate volumes. While it may not rival high-end speakers in terms of bass depth, it performs admirably in typical household settings.
The integration with Xiaomi's ecosystem is where this speaker truly shines. For those already invested in the Mi Home platform, the speaker becomes an essential hub for managing your smart devices. You can ask it to turn off the lights, lock the doors, or even start brewing coffee—all with simple voice commands.
The setup process was straightforward, requiring just a few taps in the Mi Home app to connect everything. Once set up, the speaker responded promptly to voice commands, though occasionally it required a slight rephrasing to get the desired result.
Overall, the Mi AI speaker is a solid choice for anyone looking to dip their toes into the world of smart home technology. While it may lack some advanced features found in competitors like Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant, it offers excellent value for its price point. Xiaomi has done a commendable job balancing functionality, design, and affordability in this product.
