The gospel of the porter can wear a robotic arm to transform you into a superman

The number of porters in China is not only large, but also growing. Carrying heavy loads is a daily challenge for them, often leading to physical strain and injury. However, a new era of support is on the horizon—wearable robotic arms that turn ordinary workers into "superhumans." These exoskeletons are no longer just science fiction; they’re becoming a real solution for labor-intensive jobs. Imagine a 2-meter-long robotic arm that can lift up to 1,000 pounds with ease. This isn't something you'd see in a movie—it's now being used by workers in quarries and other physically demanding environments. The Guardian GT, developed by Sarcos, is one such device designed to assist in lifting heavy objects and reducing workplace injuries. Despite its impressive size, the Guardian GT is surprisingly agile and flexible. It uses two inductive controllers that move precisely based on the operator’s commands. A camera on top of the robotic arm sends real-time video to the operator’s helmet, giving them a clear view of their surroundings. Additionally, force feedback sensors help the robot understand how much weight it's carrying, ensuring safe and controlled movement. Each robotic arm can lift up to 500 pounds, and the onboard power system allows it to work independently for extended periods. Wearing the Guardian GT gives users a truly immersive experience, as if they're operating a robot. According to Sarcos CEO Ben Wolff, "The distance from the camera to the robot's shoulder is the same as to the human body, making the experience feel natural. Even beginners can use it effortlessly." Safety is a top priority. Sarcos has developed a unique "disengagement control" system that prevents the exoskeleton from squeezing the user, mimicking the way magnets repel each other. The Guardian GT can perform complex tasks like pressing buttons or turning switches, making it ideal for dangerous or high-precision work. In summary, the Guardian GT is a game-changer for industries where safety and efficiency are critical, such as nuclear plant maintenance. As Wolff explains, "Humans make decisions to guide robotic actions, which makes work more precise and efficient." Sarcos doesn’t just see the Guardian GT as a tool—it's a glimpse into the future of heavy industry. By combining human flexibility with robotic strength, the device helps workers do more with less effort, increasing productivity while reducing physical strain. Beyond the Guardian GT, Sarcos is also developing two other models: the Guardian XO, which allows users to lift 80 pounds, and the Guardian XO Max, capable of handling 200 pounds. These exoskeletons are fully controllable by humans, whether worn directly or operated remotely. Additionally, Sarcos has created the Guardian S, a snake-like robot designed for inspection and monitoring tasks. Although the Guardian GT is not yet available for purchase, Ben Wolff mentioned an estimated price of $50,000, equivalent to a year’s salary for many workers. Equipping a worker with the Guardian GT essentially means hiring two people—one to operate the robot and another to manage the task. This not only reduces the risk of injury but also boosts overall productivity. Sarcos plans to commercialize the Guardian XO in 2019, and the Guardian GT series is currently open for personalization. With these advancements, the future of labor is looking more powerful, safer, and smarter than ever before.
