Tektronix launches ultra-low jitter and high-bandwidth solutions for 100G transceiver testing

November 20, 2012-Tektronix, the world leader in the oscilloscope market, announced the launch of the new phase reference module 82A04B for the DSA8300 oscilloscope. Through the combination with the electrical sampling module, the typical jitter of the instrument can be less than 100 femtoseconds, which is the lowest jitter level in the current multi-channel oscilloscope (sampling or real-time). The DSA8300 is an ideal instrument for designing, debugging, and testing important 100G transmitters and links (up to 6 channels) under the conditions of meeting IEEE802.3ba and 32G Fibre Channel test specifications.

One of the main test challenges faced by designers of 100 (4x25) Gb / s communication systems is to acquire high bit rate signals with high enough fidelity to accurately detect the device under test under actual test conditions. As the clock speed continues to increase, the bit period is only 40 picoseconds at 25 Gb / s. For minimizing instrument jitter and noise, it becomes crucial to provide enough bandwidth to help the signal be fully detected.

Brian Reich, general manager of Tektronix high-performance oscilloscopes, said: "The new phase reference module, upgraded electrical sampling module and other enhancements make Tektronix an absolute leader in the field of high-speed data communications. In terms of measurement system fidelity, versatility and availability , Because our prices are very competitive, we have a clear advantage in our customer base. "

The new 82A04B phase reference module can be used with the DSA8300 mainframe, and supports 2-32 GHz input clock frequency, and optionally supports up to 60 GHz.

In addition to 82A04B, Tektronix has also launched six new electrical sampling modules that support 20-70 GHz bandwidth. These modules use a unique remote sampling head to place the measurement acquisition point at or near the device under test to minimize signal degradation due to the presence of cables. Together, these features provide a unique combination of low vertical noise, low inherent jitter, and bandwidth performance, enabling engineers to fully detect signals with data rates up to 45 GHz (third-order harmonics) to meet the latest IEEE and Fibre Channel standards.

The DSA8300 supports simultaneous acquisition of up to three differential (or six single-ended) signals and achieves ultra-low jitter in multi-lane system testing common in today's 100G electrical designs. In contrast, the competitive selection scheme can only collect two single-ended signals, the maximum sampling frequency is only 50 GHz and does not support remote sampling, which results in severe signal damage.

To help designers improve productivity, Tektronix also introduced application software and firmware updates for DSA8300 series oscilloscopes to improve timing analysis, setup, and test execution. Highlighted features include guided channel acquisition and TDR step alignment, user channel delay and TDR de-skew (in time units), and quantitative and descriptive information on how to obtain the best jitter performance when using the new 82A04B phase reference module .
