Two years after the iPad is born: When the tablet PC surpasses the PC

Apple’s new-generation iPad was formally announced in early March. The “New York Times” article pointed out that with the launch of the product, the computer field may usher in a new historical moment: the sales of tablet PCs will surpass PCs in advance.

According to the latest financial report, Apple's iPad sales in the first quarter of 2012 reached 15.4 million units, close to Lenovo and HP (microblogging) computer sales.

In the third year of iPad launch, the sales of PCs and tablets have transitioned from 20:1 in 2010 to 6:1 in 2011. Will there be a big reversal between tablet and PC in 2012? "Daily Economic News" reporter began to comb.

Sales were disappointed. On January 27, 2010, Apple released the iPad tablet. The product uses a 9.7-inch 1024x768 resolution IPS display, supports multi-touch operation, using Apple's own A4 processor, battery life up to 10 hours.

This product, which was known by many people as “Large-sized iPhone” at the time, sold 300,000 units in the first week, and it sold 3.27 million units in only three months after the listing, causing major PC makers to follow suit.

At that time, the situation of PC makers was still optimistic.

In the first quarter of 2010, global PC shipments reached 84.3 million units, a year-on-year increase of 27.4%. According to Gartner's statistics, in the first quarter of 2010, PC shipments of Hewlett-Packard, Acer, Dell, and Lenovo were 15.31 million, 12 million, 10.2 million, and 6.69 million, respectively, representing a significant year-on-year increase.

On March 3, 2011, Apple released the iPad2. Last year, iPad2 shipped more than 40 million units. In stark contrast to the rise of the iPad, PC makers are ushering in a turning point. In the first quarter of 2011, global PC shipments reached 81.3 million units, a slight drop of 0.3% from 81.6 million units in the same period of the previous year. Shipments of Hewlett-Packard, Dell, and Acer were 15.37 million, 10.47 million, and 9.23 million, respectively, down 2.1%, 1.8%, and 20.4% year-on-year, while shipments of Lenovo and Toshiba increased.

In the early morning of March 8, 2012, a new generation of iPads was released. Apple lowered the price of iPad 2 across the board at the press conference. This made the opponent's attempt to compete for the market again by updating the configuration.

Two years ago, Apple's share price was only $78.20. Two years later, Apple's stock price rose by 59%, profits surged by 711%, and the market value exceeded US$500 billion. In addition, Apple's fiscal first fiscal year 2012 net profit of 13.1 billion US dollars, sales of 46.3 billion US dollars, quarterly net profit over Google's total revenue for the quarter.

As of the end of 2011, HP's market value shrank by 37.9% compared to the same quarter of the previous fiscal year. The United States' Ticome Rhodes Securities stated that its operating profit margin of HP's PC business was 5.7%, which is the lowest among HP's businesses. In the fourth quarter of 2011, Dell's market value increased by only 0.5% year-on-year.

Needham analyst Wolfe said: “The expansion of the iPad to business, education and health care is alarmingly fast.” Analysts who specifically tracked Apple’s estimates that the iPad’s sales are expected to see 60 million units this year will make the iPad from 2010 Since April, total sales have exceeded 100 million units.

According to statistics, the total number of global PC shipments in 2011 was 414.6 million units. It is believed that with the gradual increase in the trend of PC and tablet PC sales, flat-panel PCs will not be just a prediction.

When does Pad overtake the PC?

According to the financial report, Apple sold more than 15.4 million iPads in the fourth quarter of 2011, exceeding PC sales of HP, Lenovo, Acer and Dell. At the same time, PC computers have begun to show signs of decline and are increasingly being hit by tablet computers. In March last year, Windows was the first time that negative growth occurred.

In fact, whether it is from sales or sales revenue, Apple has surpassed Hewlett-Packard to become the world's largest computer manufacturer, which is mainly due to the strong growth of iPad sales and record highs.

At the launch of the next-generation iPad, Apple CEO Tim Cook started this way: "I want to talk about the 'post-PC revolution' first, and Apple is now the pioneer in leading this revolution. Cook gave the "post-PC" This definition: "In today's world, the personal computer is not the core of people's digital world, but just a device to the digital world. The devices that people use most often should be more portable, more personalized, and easier to use than PCs. ”

For Apple's latest release of the new iPad, Kingsoft CEO Fu Sheng said on Weibo: Its impact on the industry will be disruptive, and the performance of the A5X processor will enable mobile devices to fully surpass PCs for the first time.

The chairman of the board, Zhou Hongyi, said that the new configuration of iPad hardware will speed up the process of eliminating PCs from tablet PCs, and will hit the Ultrabook Alliance.

Since 2010, the sales ratio of personal PCs and tablet PCs has undergone dramatic changes: 20:1 in 2010 and 6:1 in 2011. At the same time, from a product revenue point of view, in 2011 the proportion of global digital hardware total profit: personal PC accounted for 19.3%, a year-on-year decrease of 0.5 percentage points; tablet/electronic reading accounted for 10.7%, which doubled.

In response, Dell said that it is currently shifting its focus to IT services and the enterprise storage market, while HP, which ranks first in the PC market, even once claimed to abandon the PC business.

When will the tablet beat the personal PC? According to the forecast of the computer simulation analysis conducted by Finnish research company Asymco, the time will fall in the fall of 2013, and the launch of the new-generation iPad will probably further advance the critical point in the history of computer development.
