WitsView: LED backlight design is seeking new changes, this year is reducing costs

Market research institute WitsView expects that LED backlight products will continue to gain the attention of consumers in 2010. LED backlight module design will continue to evolve, and the cost structure will continue to be optimized. In the future, brand customers will have lower cost and more competitive prices. Power LED panels help market the LED TV and LED Monitor.

LED backlighting is the most eye-catching focus of the display industry in 2009. In addition to the blooming results of NB applications, TV and Monitor products have also successfully positioned the beachfront for the market because of their light and power-saving positioning. In 2010, LED backlight products will continue to capture the attention of consumers, but how many actual procurement actions are still triggered, depending on when the price in the mainstream market appears. The LED backlight module design is constantly evolving and the cost structure will continue to be optimized.

Compared with the CCFL backlight module whose price has been bottomed out, the price of the LED Monitor backlight module is still the biggest source of resistance during its promotion. WitsView said that in order to reduce costs, the new design will start with the combination of light bars and LEDs. First, manufacturers try to replace the current mainstream 3020 low-power specification with the 5630 medium-power LED, because the luminous efficiency is better, and the number of LEDs can be greatly reduced under the same luminous flux.

In terms of light strips, the new architecture adopts short-side one-sided light output. Compared with the current long-side one-side or double-sided light-emitting design, in addition to the light bar itself, the price is shortened due to the shortened length, and the shorter distance allows the LED to be deleted. At the same time of reduction, it is also possible to effectively avoid the problem of light spot unevenness (Hot Spot). Taking 21.5W as an example, the introduction of the new design has the opportunity to reduce the price difference between LED and CCFL backlight module from the current $10 to $6.

In order to maintain the uniformity of brightness, the amount of LEDs used in the LED TV backlight module has always been the main cause of its high cost. Benefiting from the continuous improvement of the light guide technology and LED luminous efficiency, in 2010, the LED TV backlight module will replace the original six light strips with four sides of the light, and directly save 1/3 of the original Light source cost.

WitsView analyst Qiu Yubin said that the light source accounts for more than 50% of the cost of the LED TV backlight module. This breakthrough design is expected to bring nearly 20% cost savings to the backlight module. In addition to the Korean leading manufacturers, the Taiwanese panel factory will continue to produce TV panels with the same design principles from the first season of 2010.

WitsView believes that based on the above design trends, future brand customers will be able to obtain lower cost, more competitive LED panels, and also have positive incentives for LED TV or LED Montior marketing.
