(NYSE) : UMC; TSE: 2303) Announced the expansion of its manufacturing partnership to power semiconductors for automotive applications. Prior to the expansion of the partnership, UMC had been working with Infineon to produce logic chips for more than 15 years. Under the recently signed agreement, the two companies will work together to transfer Infineon's automotive-grade quality intelligent power technology (SPT9) to UMC and expand the production contract to 300mm wafers. The two parties plan to start production of SPT9 products at UMC's 300mm factory in early 2018.
SPT9 is Infineon's proprietary 130nm process technology that integrates microcontroller intelligence and power technology on a single chip.

SPT9 is a highly integrated system solution for automotive electronics
To meet the higher functional and safety requirements of automotive applications and to achieve more compact and cost-effective solutions, power semiconductors need to integrate more and more digital logic modules.
