Three cities in the United States call on residents to turn off the lights for one hour in the evening

Three cities in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Santa Barbara, California, called on residents to turn off their lights for one hour on the evening of the 20th. This is the first such organized energy-saving activity in the United States.

According to Reuters, in addition to basic security lighting, Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island and Los Angeles International Airport did not have lighting between 8 and 9 pm that day. The lights on these three urban buildings were closed and millions of residents were asked to follow suit.

Similar events were launched in Sydney, London and Paris earlier this year. Organizers of the California event said they plan to launch such an event nationwide in March 2009. The Los Angeles Water and Electricity Authority said that if all 1.4 million users in the bureau turned off the lights for one hour, the electricity saved would be enough for 2,500 families for a full year.

The power company urges people to replace at least one energy-saving light bulb when they turn the lights back on.
