National Semiconductor Introduces New Synchronous Regulator

National Semiconductor Corporation announced the addition of two new high-efficiency SIMPLESWITCHER? synchronous buck regulators to the company's PowerWiseTM line of energy-efficient products. The high-integration chips of the LM3102 and LM3103 are the industry's first synchronous buck regulators with input voltages up to 42V. The 2.5A LM3102 chip and the 750mA LM3103 chip provide regulated power for digital integrated circuits, making them ideal for industrial systems and telecommunications equipment. Together with the previously introduced 1.5A LM3100 chip, it further enriches the product lineup of National Semiconductor's SIMPLESWITCHER series.

Similar to the energy-efficient features of the LM3100 chip, the two new LM3102 and LM3103 chips have an energy efficiency of 97% and an energy efficiency rating of 8% over other similar products. The built-in MOSFET switching circuit with small inductors further reduces the number of system components and reduces system size.
Both buck regulators feature a fixed on-time (COT) controlled design that eliminates the need for loop compensation. In addition, the two chips use the patented flywheel current injection control (FCIC) technology, which can replace ceramic capacitors with ceramic capacitors. Like other products in National's SIMPLESWITHCER family, the LM3102 and LM3103 chips are easy to use, and design engineers can get support from National's online WEBENCH® power supply system design tool for faster system design.
Product features and customer benefits
The LM3102 and LM3103 synchronous buck switching regulators are suitable for input voltages from 4.5V to 42V, and the switching frequency can be set by itself up to 1MHz. The LM3102 provides up to 2.5A of current to the load and an output voltage as low as 0.8V. The LM3103 can deliver up to 750mA with an output voltage as low as 0.6V. Both regulators provide excellent regulation of the line and load. If the load is low, the LM3102 and LM3103 can be operated in intermittent mode to improve efficiency. At startup, they do not discharge the pre-biased output capacitor, thus ensuring the stability of a voltage ramp. In addition, the two chips feature programmable soft-start, valley current limiting, output overvoltage protection, and thermal shutdown protection.
Packaging and price
The LM3102 is available in a 20-pin TSSOP package with no masking solder balls. The LM3103 is available in a 16-pin TSSOP package with a thermally dissipative, unmasked solder ball. Both chips are available in volume. With a purchase of 1,000 units, the LM3102 chip is priced at $2.65 each, and the LM3103 chip is priced at $2.00 each.
